‘What does the future sound like?’
‘English Electric’ is the new album from Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), the celebrated synth-pop duo from Wirral who pioneered their genre with starkly experimental albums such as ‘Architecture and Morality’ (1981) and ‘Dazzle Ships’ (1983). Hits such as 'Enola Gay', ‘Maid of Orleans’ and ‘Souvenir’ propelled them into the stratosphere and helped shape the musical landscape of the eighties. They went on to record for the John Hughes blockbuster movie Pretty in Pink and the hit single ‘If you Leave,’ written in just a day, became a sparkling contribution to the Brat Pack canon. Influenced by Krautrock and Kraftwerk, they signed to Factory Records in 1979 and had their iconic single and album artwork designed by Peter Saville. Now their work provides a touchstone for artists such as The XX, La Roux, The Killers and Arcade Fire collaborator Owen Pallett, who re-worked ‘Dazzle Ships’ with nothing but a violin.
The original OMD line-up split in 1989 and spent years working on separate projects, Andy continued OMD for several albums before venturing into more mainstream 90s pop. Paul on the other hand branched off to form The Listening Pool with the other members of OMD, Martin Cooper and Malcolm Holmes, then subsequently formed Onetwo with Claudia Brücken.
They reunited again in 2007, initially just to play a few concerts, but dared to venture back into the studio, producing the critically acclaimed ‘History of Modern'. It is 'English Electric' though, that has particularly fired the imaginations of Paul and Andy, evoking shared memories and their original musical spark, while fusing the knowledge gained during their time apart to inject new life into the duo. This year is OMD's 35th anniversary; the original line up, which consists of Andy, Paul, Martin and Malcolm, will be touring the UK, Europe and America beginning in April 2013, Including a show at Dublin’s Vicar Street 30th May 2013.
