******************************

Vicar St opened its doors on a corner in the heart of The Liberties in Dublin on August 30th 1998 and was sadly forced to close them again in March 2020 due to the COVID19 pandemic which has shook the world. Over the first 22 years of the venue's illustrious life, Aiken Promotions have proudly hosted hosted thousands of unforgettable shows by amazing homegrown and international artist performing to millions of fans. It is now a vital part of the fabric of the world-renowned 'Irish live entertainment scene' along with many other great venues across the country who have also suffered the same devastating fate.

When we were recently awarded funding as part of the pilot Live Performance Support Scheme we took responsibility to use those funds for the Department of Arts & Culture's intended purpose – to assist in the employment of performers, artists, technicians, creative and performance support staff across the sector – but we also wanted to create something special to celebrate Vicar St, something that represented our vision of where we are at this difficult time.

'VISION' is a six-part online series hosted by Tommy Tiernan that celebrates the magic of Vicar St, the wonderful people who work there and who add so much to its personality and, most importantly, it celebrates Irish artists and reminds us of their brilliance and importance.  It features many of the acts who have had their shows cancelled this year due to the pandemic and we also invited a small selection of the huge pool of incredible new talent who we hope will be part of the future of Vicar St.

Opening the doors and turning the lights on for those two weeks of filming and working together was a wonderful experience but ultimately bittersweet due to its temporary nature. It was palpable how much the artists miss important performance spaces like Vicar St. It was also palpable how difficult things remain for everyone working in the sector and turning the lights off and walking away from Vicar St again indefinitely was heartbreaking for us all.

Obviously, you cannot replicate the true essence of being at a live gig but with VISION, we hope we have created something that reminds us all of the magic we are missing at many of the wonderful venues across the country. It took the vision of Harry Crosbie to create Vicar St in 1998 and while the vision of the future of live entertainment might be hazy, Aiken Promotions look forward to a time when we can welcome everyone back to this very special place in the heart of The Liberties.
